Artists' Statements
As a photographic artist, my primary focus on capturing contemplative images that illustrate the beauty I see in the world, from the magificent to the subtle. When I am behind the camera, my senses are heightened to the simple beauty that surrounds us, in both people and places. The subtleties of light and texture, shape and color, pattern and perspective -I see them everywhere. For me, seeing beauty is more than about what is. It's also about recalling what has been and imaging what can be. A contemplative photograph can inspire all three. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

While in college I loved painting and art history. I create abstract acrylic paintings with various textures that resemble ancient frescoes and wall fragments. Still others have suggestively traditional motifs with heavily distressed surfaces. Acrylic mediums are used to achieve crackle effects, add texture and build up layers of transparent color. Fluid acrylics allow me to achieve watercolor effects. Iridescent and interference paints give a wonderful glow. I am currently working with botanical themes, also henna tattoo designs and eastern motifs.

Photography My hope and goal is that the viewer will experience a connection with what they see. Whether it’s a feeling of solitude as they gaze upon a vast field of grass, or a night sky blanketed with stars; a past remembrance of an old abandoned farm, or the remnants of a church, once stark and pristine; if I can help the viewer achieve some measure of emotion, then I have served my purpose.
I’ve been behind a camera for over 40 years. Even though I’ve had other careers on and off, photography is my first love. Against my father’s advice, I attended the Rochester Institute of Technology, where I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from the College of Photographic Arts and Sciences (he suggested a degree in business). Upon reflection, I realize I made the right choice, since business management came naturally to me. I was then free to focus on my first love.

My paintings reflect what appeals to me and although I don’t seem to settle on one subject, there is one common thread. I’m especially attracted to and love painting people and specifically children. Having lived on both coasts and many states in between and having traveled extensively abroad, I’m fascinated by not only the Amish, of Pennsylvania, but the cowboys of Texas, and the different nationalities of the world. Although I paint from photographs that I have taken or have been supplied to me, I will take and change what the camera “sees” and make my own composition. I want to capture a moment in time for the viewer and show them something that the camera couldn’t. If I can do that, and they see beauty in everyday ordinary things, then I have succeeded. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
